Sister/ Charge Nurse (RGN) - Banbury

The New Foscote Hospital has been successfully established in Banbury for almost 40 years and has provided services and treatments to thousands of people from across the region during this time. We have over 50 consultants, all of whom are leaders in their specialist fields and choose to hold their private practices here, working alongside our friendly, highly qualified and experienced nursing and support teams. With the expansion of the hospital and the opening of a second theatre, there is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Sister/Charge Nurse to join our fantastic team.

Role Purpose:

At The New Foscote Hospital, the Sister/Charge Nurse will undertake and delegate the management and organisation of care provision on the ward, in pre-op assessment and the outpatient department clinics. They will provide and ensure that quality planned care of patients, during their perioperative phase, is consistent throughout their journey with us. Providing appropriate clinical leadership throughout the department and deputise for the Matron as appropriate in supporting the nursing team.

• Monitor, apply and ensure others comply with legislation, policies and procedures
• Work alongside the Matron to ensure that all departmental documents, policies and procedures are up-to-date and in line with current thinking, guidelines and laws
• Provide administrational, organisational and managerial support to the Matron
• Accountability for delegated tasks

Main Duties and Key Accountabilities:

• Be involved in the daily handovers to communicate all aspects of care and needs
• To demonstrate excellent communication skills within all nursing care
• To assess and plan nursing daily care
• Provide pre- and post-operation care
• Monitor and administer medication and intravenous infusions
• Take patient samples, pulses, temperatures and blood pressures
• To supervise and mentor staff nurses, healthcare assistants (HCAs) and student nurses
• Organise and prioritise workloads
• Provide emotional support to patients and relatives
• To efficiently and accurately complete all written documentation and record keeping
• Be a role model to other staff on all departmental and hospital-wide matters
• Ensure the working environment is as safe as possible and complies with company, professional, legal requirements and guidelines
• Adhere to Infection Prevention Control policies and procedures
• To work closely with the Procurement Department
• To assist and support the Matron with any additional departmental work
• To undertake audits and spot-checks, utilising results to maintain / uplift the standards within the hospital
• Liaising with senior members of staff on hospital-wide matters
• Covering Matron’s duties when required

Qualifications & Technical Skills
• Degree in adult general nursing
• Trained in Phlebotomy & Cannulation
• Trained in wound assessment
• Trained in administering medications
• IV trained
• Trained in basic observations / ECGs
• Trained in catheterisation
• ILS
• Safeguarding (Adults) Level 3
• Safeguarding (Children) Level 3

Knowledge & Experience
• An understanding of perioperative patient care
• Knowledge of the deteriorating patient
• Practical knowledge of safeguarding within a healthcare setting
• At least 3 years of post-qualification experience within an appropriate healthcare setting
• Surgical ward experience / acute care setting
• Experienced in complaint handling
• Experience of recruitment, appraisals and disciplinary procedures
• Previous experience within a similar role of Sister / Charge Nurse
• Experience of audit control
• Linked Lead role i.e. Back Care Facilitator, Infection Control Lead
