This is post is in order to continue to provide level 2 services at this university hospital site and also to enable the department to participate in undergraduate teaching at the nearby Medical School.

The post will provide an excellent opportunity to actively contribute in the further development of a modern Haematology service within this highly regarded hospital with its wide range of acute and community services, which will afford high professional visibility. With the formation of a cancer alliance at the nearby University hospital. There are common strategies and protocols for the care of patients with malignant haematological disorders discussed at multi-disciplinary meetings.

Close co-operation between the two units enables a number of initiatives aimed at staff training and education. There is a dedicated Haematology inpatient ward with direct admission rights, an acute oncology service and a busy haematology and chemotherapy day care unit. The Post holder will be expected to be responsible for the care of haematology inpatients, day care patients and outpatients, including participation in clinical trials.

Main Duties

1. Share with consultant colleagues the haematology workload.
2. Consultant input to the Anticoagulant, Antenatal Haematology and Transfusion services.
3. Work as part of a multidisciplinary team with junior medical staff, nursing staff, pharmacist, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers and palliative care nurses.
4. Attendance and discussion of all appropriate patients at MDT meetings for Haematological Oncology and any other MDTs that may be set up.
5. Provide consultant support for the pathology laboratory which functions as part of the Connaught region including attendance and participation in local and EPA level forums.
6. Provide a consultation and advisory service to medical colleagues in other specialities in the Trust and to general practitioners.
7. Participation in clinical meetings, postgraduate and undergraduate activities of the Trust, and in particular offer teaching sessions where required.
8. Participation in the teaching and audit activities of the Department, including quality control in the laboratory.
9. Provide with the other consultants a system of mutual out-of-hours cover for annual, study and professional leave. Short periods (up to 2 weeks) of sick leave will also be expected to be provided bythe remaining consultants.
10. Share a 1:3 on-call rota Band A with prospective cover. Junior support from within haematology are first on call during the on call period.
11. Participate in the Trust’s Clinical Governance processes and in CPD. The Trust will provide study leave expenses in line with national terms and conditions of service.
12. Contribute to management of the service and, by agreement, take on the role of clinical lead in due course.

Standard Duties and responsibilities

a) To participate in development of and undertake all duties and functions pertinent to the Consultant’s area of competence, as set out within the Clinical Directorate Service Plan and in line with policies as specified by the Employer.
b) To ensure that duties and functions are undertaken in a manner that minimises delays for patients and possible disruption of services.
c) To work within the framework of the hospital / agency’s service plan and/or levels of service (volume, types etc.) as determined by the Employer. Service planning for individual clinical services will be progressed through the Clinical Directorate structure or other arrangements as apply.
d) To co-operate with the expeditious implementation of the Disciplinary Procedure
e) To formally review the execution of the Clinical Directorate Service Plan with the Clinical Director / Employer periodically. The Clinical Directorate Service Plan shall be reviewed periodically at the request of the Consultant or Clinical Director / Employer. The Consultant may initially seek internal review of the determinations of the Clinical Director regarding the Service Plan.
f) To participate in the development and operation of the Clinical Directorate structure and in such management or representative structures as are in place or being developed. The Consultant shall receive training and support to enable him/her to participate fully in such structures.
g) To provide, as appropriate, consultation in the Consultant’s area of designated expertise in respect of patients of other Consultants at their request.
h) To ensure in consultation with the Clinical Director that appropriate medical cover is available at all times having due regard to the implementation of the European Working Time Directive as it relates to doctors in training.
i) To supervise and be responsible for diagnosis, treatment and care provided by non-Consultant Hospital Doctors (NCHDs) treating patients under the Consultant’s care.
j) To participate as a right and obligation in selection processes for non-Consultant Hospital Doctors and other staff as appropriate. The Employer will provide training as required. The Employer shall ensure that a Consultant representative of the relevant specialty / sub-specialty is involved in the selection process.
k) To participate in clinical audit and proactive risk management and facilitate production of all data/information required for same in accordance with regulatory, statutory and corporate policies and procedures.
l) To participate in and facilitate production of all data/information required to validate delivery of duties and functions and inform planning and management of service delivery

Job Plan

A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee, the Operational Medical Director and Lead Haematology Consultant, on behalf of the Trust’s Medical Director, based on the provisional timetable. This will be signed by the Chief Executive and will be effective from the commencement date of the appointment.

It will be reviewed at 3 months & thereafter annually or at any time, but no less than 3 months after a previous review, as requested by the appointee, Operational Medical Director or Clinical Lead & adjusted accordingly to the agreement of both parties.

The successful candidate will be offered a 10 PA contract in the first instance in accordance with the terms of the new consultant contract. Additional PAs may be available to interested applicants. The mix of clinical sessions in the final job plan and rota will be agreed after discussion with the Divisional Director, but the weekly timetable will include the following mix of programmed activities.

Direct Clinical Care (including lab work, clinics, day ward, clinical admin):

8.5PAs on average per week CPD/Teaching/Research/Audit/Clinical Governance:
1.5SPAs on average per week

The Job Plan will be reviewed annually, following the Annual Appraisal Meeting. The Job Plan will be a prospective agreement that sets out a consultant’s duties, responsibilities and objectives for the coming year. It will cover all aspects of the consultant’s professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities. It will provide a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external. In addition, it will include personal objectives, including details of their link to wider service objectives, and details of the support required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan and the objectives.

Initially 1.5 SPAs, (detailed on page 6), will be given for non clinical work and will be reviewed between 3 to 6 months into the post. SPAs are likely to include at least 0.5 PAs to allow the appointee to familiarise themselves with all relevant guidelines, policies and procedures, other SPAs to be used for CPD, audit, guidelines and governance. At the review point the number of SPAs will be adjusted dependent on what commitments the new appointee has taken on within the department, University, Division, Trust or Region.

On Call Availability

On-call responsibility will be 1 in 3 with prospective cover for leave with the Consultant. The on-call period includes all hours outside Monday to Friday from 09.00 -1700hrs.


This post is open to doctors who hold Registration as a Specialist in the Specialist Division of the Registrar of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland in the specialty of Clinical and Haematology.

Management Responsibility

All Consultants are required to attend the monthly Directorate Meetings. Post holders will be expected to share in administrative duties allocated by mutual agreement within the Directorate. As part of the Consultant Team, the consultant will offer mentoring support and lead the existing clinical team through; one-to-one support, individual case management and complex cases, identifying development needs and suggesting CPD (Continuous Professional Development) opportunities and responding to clinical enquiries via e-mail and telephone.
