Salary = £39,174 – £45,419 (potentially negotiable in excess of £46K depending on experiences)
- Hours = 37.5 p/week. Monday to Friday with attendance at MDTs and formal meetings which may occasionally take pace in the early morning or late evening.
Ø Acute Pain (60%) – General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Ortho, Cardiac Nursing & ITU.
Ø Chronic Pain (30%) – Neuro Rehab Wards & ITU.
Ø End of life Pain (10%) – Oncology & ITU. (Although only 10% - this area will need most developments in this particular service)
Duties & Responsibilities
- To act as a role model and provide supervision in the clinical area demonstrating advanced clinical specialist skills in order to provide the highest standard of individualised evidence based, patient centred care while supervising the work of others.
- Provide excellent care communicating effectively with patients to enable them to make informed decisions about their care, providing appropriate education to them and their families to participate in decisions.
- To assist in compliance with National Regulations including NICE guidance and CQC expectations within the field of Pain nursing management.
- To assist in audit of the inpatient service, including patient satisfaction and patient outcome measures. To act on results of audit in collaboration with colleagues to continually monitor and develop the service.
- To identify staff training needs, and provide group and individual teaching to nursing staff on aspects of pain care, to support the development of specialist knowledge. Liaise with the education department, medical, nursing and other education providers to develop and deliver training programmes that meet the needs of our staff.
- Pre-op assessments of complex pain patients.
- Pre-op management of patient’s fears and expectations on admission.
- Reviewing patients on pain management devices such as Epidurals/ PCA's.
- Coordinating Pain rounding on patients and liaison with Pain team to improve outcomes.
- Liaising with other consultants as required.
- Post-operative visits on the HDU and ITU and ensuring pain advice is implemented.
- Proactively addressing and documenting pain issues and notifying the relevant consultants.
- Support of Chronic/ End of life pain management.
- Post op audit and teaching.
- Collection of data on patient outcomes to improve clinical practice.
- Introduction of National Guidelines and management of change to improve practice.
- Supporting ward nurses in the management of patients.
- Regular daily post op visits to ensure short length of stay.
- Managing complaints by listening and responding to patient concerns.
- Follow up phone calls following discharge of patients.
- Collate activity and driving improved patient satisfaction (PSS) pain scores.
- Further develop and grow the pain service at TWH liaising with the MDT to embrace National contemporary guidelines.
- Active membership of the TWH Enhanced Recovery project team.
- Remain up to date and credible with conference attendance and training.
- NMC registered Nurse.
- Acute Surgical or Critical Care background is advantageous.
- Post basic qualification in clinical speciality related to practice area (pain management qualification).
- Experience at a similar level with extensive relevant post registration experience.
- Desirable recognised teaching qualification or prepared to work towards.
- Evidence of Masters Level learning or prepared to work towards.
- Evidence of managing caseloads.
- Experience of treating Acute or Chronic pain patients.
