The Anaesthetic Department forms part of the Planned Care Division. This is headed by a Divisional Director & supported by a management team including a Divisional Medical Director

Intensive Care

The Adult ICU is a new, customised PFI build with 20 beds rated Good in a recent CQC report. We admit over 1200 patients per year with a 60:40 split of medical to surgical admissions, 90 % of these being emergency admissions. We are a busy general ICU!

The hospital provides a tertiary support service for hepatic and renal patients and in addition offers primary coronary angioplasty. We have a purpose built ICU with state of the art ultrasound, echo and imaging hardware and software. We are accredited for advanced training in Intensive Care medicine. We are currently introducing full electronic charting and paperless record keeping with a customised AGFA system.

They introduced point of care echocardiography into our ICU 7 years ago and have developed a comprehensive echo service for our unit. We have two echo machines on the unit with TOE and TTE capability. In addition we have Echo PACS available on the unit to review all existing scans. We have a TTE and TOE high fidelity simulator that we use for staff training and to help deliver our nationally advertised ICU echocardiography course.

All ICU consultants have offices on the unit and there is shared secretarial support available.

Anaesthesia Department

The Anaesthetics Department co-ordinates the provision of a comprehensive anaesthetic and intensive care service to all hospital within the Munster Region. The Anaesthetic Department is a part of the Surgical Services Directorate comprising Anaesthesia, Surgery and Trauma & Orthopaedics.
The hospital provide services for Trauma and Orthopaedics, ENT, General surgery, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Paediatrics, General, Orthopaedic and Urological surgery and Ophthalmic surgery. There are 35 operating theatres including a busy daycase surgery department. There is a 20 bedded level 2/3 Intensive Care unit and a 16 bedded post surgical stepdown unit.

The post holder will join the existing team of consultants including Locums providing anaesthetic and critical care support to a wide range of surgical specialties.

They have a strong management structure based on the pillars of Clinical Governance. They have a Multi-Disciplinary Ethos, and are pleased to work closely with other hospital consultants and allied health professionals to deliver patient centered care.
All members of the department are actively encouraged to take part in monthly audit/teaching days and other tutorial/seminar groups. Consultants take an active interest in the education and training of junior staff and the examination record of the department is excellent.
Participation of all staff in monthly audit/teaching days and other tutorial/seminar groups is actively encouraged and supported.


In addition to any specialist interests all consultants will be involved in providing a general anaesthesia service to the Trust.

i. Provision with consultant colleagues of a Anaesthetic service to hospital & surrounding areas with responsibility for diagnosis & treatment of patients at the hospitals & clinics at which you have duties.
ii. Responsible for the continuing care & treatment of patients in your charge & personal performance of clinical duties as agreed in your job plan, allowing for all proper delegation to & training of your staff.
iii. Provision of an out-of-hours service with consultant colleagues including on-call rota commitments.
iv. Active participation in undergraduate & post graduate education, including training sessions for Foundation Years, Core and Specialty Registrars.
v. Provision of cover for your consultant colleagues during reasonable periods of leave including care of patients & supervision of junior doctors.
vi. Responsible for the professional supervision, training & management of junior medical staff, carrying out teaching, examination & accreditation duties as required & contributing to postgraduate & CPD activity locally & nationally as appropriate.
vii. Participate in clinical audit under local arrangements.
viii. Commitment to entering patients into MRC trials where appropriate (if the appointee has an interest in research this would be supported by the Trust & the Division).
ix. Commitment to taking part in annual appraisal process which will be undertaken by the Assistant Clinical Director.
x. Responsible for compliance with personal continuing professional development requirements with the support of the Trust. It is mandatory for all Consultants to keep up to date with evidence based practice.
xi. Responsible for maintaining awareness of & acting in accordance with professional guidelines such as “Duties of a Doctor”, “Good Medical Practice”, & the “IMC Performance Procedures” .
xii Responsibility for implementing the Infection Control Policies as determined by the hospitals HSE policy.
xiii. Exceptional requirements to undertake additional duties for limited periods within geographical area specified above or undertake duties at other hospitals in the event of a major disaster or incident.

Key Tasks

• To deliver high quality consultant care in intensive care and anaesthetic practice
• To share responsibility for the day-to-day management of the general anaesthetic service and the ICU. This will involve working flexibly with others to maximise the utilisation of the anaesthetic workforce.
• Clinical Supervision and support of junior anaesthetic staff, including teaching.
• Training of junior staff & medical students
• Participation in graduate & undergraduate teaching programmes
• To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
• To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME).

Standard Duties and responsibilities

a) To participate in development of and undertake all duties and functions pertinent to the Consultant’s area of competence, as set out within the Clinical Directorate Service Plan and in line with policies as specified by the Employer.
b) To ensure that duties and functions are undertaken in a manner that minimises delays for patients and possible disruption of services.
c) To work within the framework of the hospital / agency’s service plan and/or levels of service (volume, types etc.) as determined by the Employer. Service planning for individual clinical services will be progressed through the Clinical Directorate structure or other arrangements as apply.
d) To co-operate with the expeditious implementation of the Disciplinary Procedure
e) To formally review the execution of the Clinical Directorate Service Plan with the Clinical Director / Employer periodically. The Clinical Directorate Service Plan shall be reviewed periodically at the request of the Consultant or Clinical Director / Employer. The Consultant may initially seek internal review of the determinations of the Clinical Director regarding the Service Plan.
f) To participate in the development and operation of the Clinical Directorate structure and in such management or representative structures as are in place or being developed. The Consultant shall receive training and support to enable him/her to participate fully in such structures.
g) To provide, as appropriate, consultation in the Consultant’s area of designated expertise in respect of patients of other Consultants at their request.
h) To ensure in consultation with the Clinical Director that appropriate medical cover is available at all times having due regard to the implementation of the European Working Time Directive as it relates to doctors in training.
i) To supervise and be responsible for diagnosis, treatment and care provided by non-Consultant Hospital Doctors (NCHDs) treating patients under the Consultant’s care.
j) To participate as a right and obligation in selection processes for non-Consultant Hospital Doctors and other staff as appropriate. The Employer will provide training as required. The Employer shall ensure that a Consultant representative of the relevant specialty / sub-specialty is involved in the selection process.
k) To participate in clinical audit and proactive risk management and facilitate production of all data/information required for same in accordance with regulatory, statutory and corporate policies and procedures.
l) To participate in and facilitate production of all data/information required to validate delivery of duties and functions and inform planning and management of service delivery

Teaching Commitments

• regular commitments to ward based teaching of undergraduates.
• participation in the lecture programmes for 2nd and 4th & 5th year medical students.
• teaching of other groups as required including other specialty juniors and specialist nurses & FRCA candidates

Job Plan

A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee, the Operational Medical Director and Lead Anaesthetics- ICU/ ITU Consultant, on behalf of the Trust’s Medical Director, based on the provisional timetable. This will be signed by the Chief Executive and will be effective from the commencement date of the appointment.

It will be reviewed at 3 months & thereafter annually or at any time, but no less than 3 months after a previous review, as requested by the appointee, Operational Medical Director or Clinical Lead & adjusted accordingly to the agreement of both parties.

The job plan is a prospective agreement setting out a consultant’s duties, responsibilities & objectives for the coming year. It covers all aspects of professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education & managerial responsibilities. It provides a clear schedule of commitments both internal & external. In addition, it includes personal objectives, including details of their link to wider service objectives & details of the support required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan & objectives.

The job plan for the first 3 months is on average 10.5 programmed activities per week. It is recognised that the balance of the job plan will need to be discussed with the appointee.

The oncall rota will be a 1:10 with a 3% category A availability supplement.

A typical job plan will involve one day a week on ICU (Friday) and two other days of anaesthetics fixed. The non ICU fixed sessions can be negotiated in time, dependant on the successful candidate’s special interests and available lists in the department. We will try to accommodate a preferred on call day to fit the needs of the service.


This post is open to doctors who hold Registration as a Specialist in the Specialist Division of the Registrar of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland in the specialty of Clinical and Anaesthetics- ICU/ ITU.

Management Responsibility

All Consultants are required to attend the monthly Directorate Meetings. Post holders will be expected to share in administrative duties allocated by mutual agreement within the Directorate. As part of the Consultant Team, the consultant will offer mentoring support and lead the existing clinical team through; joint clinics, one-to-one support, individual case management and complex cases, identifying development needs and suggesting CPD (Continuous Professional Development) opportunities and responding to clinical enquiries via e-mail and telephone.
