* Provide a highly specialist clinical/technical Biochemistry service.
* Independently discuss, and provide specialist advice to clinicians, including senior health professionals and consultant medical staff in both primary and secondary care, on the complex specialist interpretation of all biochemistry tests, including the selection, performance and interpretation of clinically relevant tests and highly specialised advice on differential diagnoses, monitoring, treatment and therapy changes (e.g. endocrine disorders such as monitoring thyroid hormone replacement).
* Clinically authorise reports while actively reviewing current and previous results, providing interpretative comments and advice. Actively contribute to the provision of an associated advisory and interpretive service across all areas on their own responsibility.
* Develop clinical guidelines for testing strategies and the development of clinical protocols within the department and across the Hospital Trust.
* Attend and participate at local, national and international clinical/scientific meetings in order to maintain knowledge and acquire new knowledge and skills for service development.
* Attend the Endocrine Case Discussion meetings and present cases as required.

* Have responsibility for the quality, to nationally accepted standards (CPA/UKAS or equivalent), of the service provided within the Clinical Biochemistry Department, including participation in appropriate internal, regional, national and international quality control and assessment schemes.
* Provide scientific and technical support, including routine evaluation of External Quality Assurance reports, for assays associated with the Specialist Test Section of Biochemistry (e.g. myeloma related, xanthochromia, sweat tests and glycated haemoglobin).
* Develop an expertise in and responsibility for the organisation of a specialist area of the department in an economic and effective manner and contribute to the provision of a high quality service.
* Disseminate knowledge gained during study or research and develop projects resulting in presentation and publications at local, regional, national and international meetings and in peer reviewed scientific journals.
* Have a detailed knowledge of analytical methods, in order to identify and resolve complex analytical problems.
* Have responsibility for the evaluation and implementation of recent developments in clinical biochemistry and ensure the service provides evidence-based good practice.
* With the laboratory management team, select, procure, evaluate and implement new technologies as appropriate. Including providing expert advice to procurement department on the purchase of major contracts.
* Provide scientific support and management coordination and direction for instrument/method evaluations including planning, execution, statistical analysis, write-up and implementation. Develop spreadsheets for recording and analysis of evaluation data where appropriate.
