This is a superb role for a warm and caring person who has extensive experience of working as a specialist Speech and language Therapist. This service has a designated caseload of 8 – 12 year old children with a range of speech, language and communication, eating/drinking difficulties and Special Educational Needs (SEN) attending local mainstream school. The hospital offers regular supervision support and there is an established annual appraisal system. Ongoing professional development is actively encouraged.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
• To manage a specialist caseload of school aged children with special needs. This includes: gaining appropriate consent, comprehensive assessment and differential diagnosis of individual children with diverse and complex presentations using a range of specialist assessments/techniques e.g. CELF 3, SAOLA, BPVS, planning, delivering and evaluating specialist treatment programmes, in particular in area of specific language impairment e.g. colour coding.
• To maintain intense concentration in all aspects of patient management for prolonged periods on a daily basis particularly for in depth analysis of articulation, facial expression, non-verbal communication
• To provide specialist advice and programmes to others regarding the management and care of children and young people with speech, language, communication and/or feeding and swallowing difficulties, in particular in the area of older children with SLI.
• To demonstrate clinical effectiveness by use of evidence based practice and manage clinical risk within defined caseload.
• To demonstrate the ability to reflect on auditory, visual and kinaesthetic aspects of client’s communication and to identify appropriate strategies to facilitate and enhance communicative effectiveness adapting and facilitating own communication according to perceived client needs
• To demonstrate highly developed auditory and perceptual skills in the assessment diagnosis and treatment of patients/clients to include phonetic transcription of speech
• To demonstrate skills in handling clients with disabilities
• To recommend and implement alternative/augmentative communication programmes and equipment necessary to meet individual CYP needs. This includes sign language, symbol systems and more complex electronic aids
• To demonstrate the ability to reflect on practice with peers/clinical supervisor and seek support as necessary.
• To demonstrate the ability to target training (formal and informal) appropriately to the needs of course participants in particular parents and schools staff and evaluate training provided, with specific involvement in training around specific language impairment, and developing multi-disciplinary training packages with colleagues from other disciplines on the same.
• To maintain a database of children attending after school social skills groups across the Schools team.
• To offer advice to SLT colleagues on assessment and management of CYP with speech and language needs.
• To maintain up to date and accurate case notes in line with RCSLT professional standards and local trust policies.
Requirements:
• Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification
• Ideally 2 years experience at post graduate experience of working with Children and young people
• Assessment treatment and management of children with speech, language and communication difficulties
• Working with children with eating and drinking difficulties
• Health Professions Council – Licence to Practice
• Registered Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
• Evidence of completion of specialist short courses relevant to children with Special needs / specific language impairment e.g. Makaton, SLI Conferences, Narrative
• Level 1 training in dysphagia
